The album was compiled by international DJ duo Bart and Baker and features the original track ‘Night and Day (ft Tamara Kesner)’ by our Cape Town future jazz band PRAVDA. Saga of the European King: Theatre Composition

by John Bartmann
Saga of the European King: Theatre Composition

I was commissioned by the theatre team behind Medieval comedy podcast The Saga of the European King to score some of the music for a live theatre presentation. The event was held at the ONCA Gallery as part of the Brighton Digital Festival and was funded by Arts Council England. The 5-minute piece was composed according to a brief by the clients describing the need for ‘an epic fight scene on the back of a dragon’. The mood transitions from a rallying war speech to epic action to melancholy denouement.

Listen to the recording

I’ve done a fair amount of music composition for the (zany!) creators of The Saga of the European King in the past, including a Will Smith rap song, film music composition and this jazzy film noir character sketch of ‘Detective GoGoGorilla’:

Pinocchio: UK Theatre Music Production

by John Bartmann
Pinocchio: UK Theatre Music Production

I wrote and arranged three pieces for a theatrical performance of Pinocchio in Sussex, United Kingdom by Bard & Troubadour.

Listen to ‘Chapters of My Life’

This string section and piano were composed in response to a brief by the client. All recording, production, transfer of ideas and files and client feedback was done internationally and remotely (with me in Brisbane and their team in Surrey) over a period of three weeks. It was scored in MuseScore 2.0 and recorded on my Fender FV-3 electric violin.

Listen to ‘Tale of a Puppet’

I arranged and recorded this piano section as the introductory backing track of a theatrical performance of Pinocchio in Sussex by Bard & Troubadour. The piano, accordion and guitar piece includes the silences required for dialogue, which presented a challenge. The piece was co-written by Amy Sutton and Joshua Crisp.

Listen to ‘Toyland Rock n Roll Arrangement’

The brief for this rock n roll piece included references to a “bad boy” puppet character, and the feel of “Secret Agent Man” by Johnny Rivers. Co-written by Amy Sutton and Joshua Crisp.

Fairytales and Fantasy: DNA Musik Production Music Album

by John Bartmann
Fairytales and Fantasy: DNA Musik Production Music Album

Fairytales & Fantasy is a production music album rooted in fantasy, folklore and the natural world. From delicate lullaby, to fierce and bold, high-impact epic adventure, this imaginative take on the creatures and scenarios that populate the broad world of myth and fantasy fiction is explored with a freshness and verve. The album was co-composed with Nic Paton and is currently licensed exclusively to the German library DNA Musik (aka Minds and Music).

Of the album, John Bartmann says, “Since Nic and I first started working together in 2006, we’ve consistently been inspired to create music which reflects the rich tradition of storytelling rooted in the natural world, and to the universal archetypes contained in fairytales and fantasy. For this albums, we used as many live instruments as possible, particularly wooden ones. We wanted to convey a certain closeness to the earth and nature in the composition. We’re really happy with the results, particularly how suitable many of these tracks are for childrens’ TV.”

Era Flug Aviation: Video Tutorial Series

by John Bartmann
Era Flug Aviation: Video Tutorial Series

Era Flug is an aviation company based in Cape Town. This online tutorial series deals with various aviation principles. Video production and music by John Bartmann. Conceptually, the series aimed to bypass the ‘talking head’ format of many instructional videos and present just the raw information as directly and with as much clarity as possible. The final format was that of an animated lightbox, used also by other channels such as Minute Physics and RSA Animate
